This might be the best game for the DK2 to date.
At the time of writing there are 13 demos to download on our DK2 Games List page, with Proton Pulse being the latest addition. Originally released August 2013 on Oculus Share, Justin Moravetz, Lead Developer behind the up-coming Vanguard V game, has spent the last 12 months tweaking the game, adding additional music, and recently implementing DK2 support.
Today he finally released the updated demo of Proton Pulse; you can download it for your DK2 headset here: http://www.vanguardv.com/Proton/
Proton Pulse shares many similarities to Breakout, the classic Atari game from 1976 that sees players bounce a ball against floating bricks to smash them into oblivion. It’s just as addictive here in Proton Pulse, but updated with full 3D graphics, thousands of particle effects, a glass shield and some really nice touches that bring the whole thing to life.
So what’s it like to play on the Oculus Rift DK2? In short: amazing. There’s a crystal clarity to the image that makes aiming the glass shield so much easier; the low-persistence display keep every pixel and polygon in focus the entire time, and the game has a psychedelic look to it that’s clearly inspired by those visions of virtual reality we had back in the 90s.
The DK2 doesn’t only make the game more vivid and easier to see, because it also adds positional tracking to the game. It’s subtle, but it means you can now lean sideways or up and down to get a better look at the bricks floating in front of you. Or ‐ as we quickly discovered ‐ jump back in our seats to dodge the ball as it skims past the shield and towards our face.
Additionally, Proton Pulse works perfectly on the DK2. You don’t need to fiddle with extended desktop modes, or worry about a shimmering or flicking image; it simply works. Quite an impressive achievement considering the headset has been out less that a week.
You can download Proton Pulse today for either the DK1 or DK2 headsets. If you haven’t already given the game a try then there’s really no excuse not too. It’s fun, addictive and arcade gaming at its best.
